Railway Electrification

Overhead Catenary System (OCS)

A railway electrification system supplies electric power to railway trains and trams without an on-board prime mover or local fuel supply. In comparison to the principal alternative, the diesel engine, electric railways offer substantially better energy efficiency, lower emissions and lower operating costs. Electric locomotives are usually quieter, more powerful, more responsive and more reliable than diesel engines. They have no local emissions, which is an important advantage in tunnels and urban areas.

Although these locomotives have many advantages, electrification requires significant capital expenditure. Colmar offers the right equipment to electrify the tracks efficiently. Our machines are used to prepare the foundation for the masts, erect the mast, and put the overhead horizontal beam into place.

T10000FS with Auger

For the foundation, Colmar Hi-Rail loaders can be equipped with a telescopic piling drill accessory of size, consistent with the application, to which a replaceable auger is fitted. Verticality is guaranteed by a control system, including a display in the cab. One operator only is required to move and operate the r/r loader & accessory from its ergonomically designed cab.

  • Hole Depths up to 5 m
  • Auger diameter: up to 1200 mm
  • Suitable to various types of soil conditions
  • Requiring only one assistant on the ground, for periodic removal of spoil from the auger

T10000FS with Pile Driver

The Hi-Rail loaders can also be equipped with a pile driver. This accessory grabs the pile and drives it into the ground by means of a vibration system. Verticality is guaranteed by a control system, including a display in the cab. Only one operator is required to move and operate the loader & accessory from its ergonomically designed cab.

  • Tubular (steel) pile diameter: up to 760 mm
  • Timber pile diameter: up to 420 mm
  • H-beams: up to H500
  • Suitable to various types of soils

T10000FS with Hydraulic Impact Hammer

The Hi-Rail loaders can also be equipped with a hydraulic impact hammer. This accessory holds the pile and drives it into the ground by means of impacts by an integrated hammer. Only one operator is required to move and operate the loader & accessory, from its ergonomically designed cab.

  • Pile diameter: up to 1200 mm
  • Frequency of impacts: variable, from 1 to 100/1’
  • Suitable to various types of soil
  • Suitable to work over and beyond the adjacent track

Colmar Hi-Rail loaders can avail two systems for handling, lifting, erecting and fastening railway masts:

T10000FS with Boom Extension

The Rhino Horn attachment is an extension applied to the Hi-Rail loader boom, which allows to strap the upper end of the mast, lift it and bring it to a vertical position.

T10000FS with Mast Manipulator

The manipulator is a special accessory that can grab and lift the mast from the ground/wagon, bring it to a vertical position, and position it on the plinth with a high degree of precision. This is important for stud fastening purposes.

T10000FSCG Railroad Crane

Our Hi-Rail crane, the T10000FSCG, has the capability to install the overhead horizontal beam with the telescoping boom reverse knuckle. This allows the operator to reach the desired position in a more vertical way, with minimum interference with the other structures.

OCS Installation

Why should a rail contractor rely on Colmar solutions when searching suitable machines for electrification jobs?

  • Long lasting Hi-Rail loader and excavator experience (almost half a century)
  • Engine and hydraulics sized for maximum performances
  • Expertise in piling
  • First class worldwide suppliers of key accessories, already engineered
  • Hi-Rail loaders that are convertible into other railway jobs: the contractor investment is not limited to the specific railway electrification contract time, but extends to the following fruition periods. As general maintenance comes into the picture, from day 1, Colmar Hi-Rail loaders can be used for so many alternative jobs, simply by detaching the piling accessory, and replacing it with one suitable for the new job.
